Cormier injured; out of UFC 206
UFC 206, scheduled for December 10th in Toronto, Canada, has just lost its main event. Daniel Cormier, who was scheduled to defend his Light Heavyweight belt against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, is out for an undisclosed injury. Multiple sources are citing a report from October regarding DC’s knee problems as the reason for him bowing out of UFC 206. There hasn’t been anything confirmed, yet, from Cormier’s camp. Johnson, meanwhile, is left standing without an opponent. In what was a heavily anticipated rematch between Cormier and Johnson, fans will have to wait for a future PPV bout to pit these two against each other inside the octagon. The fighters last met at UFC 187 in Las Vegas, Nevada. A title bout for the vacant Light Heavyweight Championship, Cormier submitted Johnson in the 3rd round with a rear naked choke to lay claim to the belt.
Daniel Cormier has defended the belt just once, against Alexander Gustafsson, that fight being at UFC 192 in Houston, TX. The fight went the distance, with Cormier successfully defending and getting the victory by split decision. DC was next scheduled to defend his belt for the 2nd time at UFC 200 against the former champ, Jon ‘Bones’ Jones. Three days prior to the July 9 rematch at UFC 200, it was announced that Jones had tested positive for (2) banned substances and was removed from the card. Subsequently, Cormier went on to fight Anderson ‘Spider’ Silva on the Main Card, winning a unanimous 3 round decision, with the bout being scheduled as the fight leading up to the co-main event.
With Cormier injured and out of UFC 206, there has been no word on Anthony Johnson’s opponent, but rumors are swirling about a rematch with Glover Teixeira, his most recent opponent at UFC 202, and possibly Mauricio Rua, who last fought at UFC 198 in May 2016. UFC 206 has now seen the loss of Cormier, Rashad Evans, John Moraga, Chad Laprise and, subsequently, Li JingLiang who was the opponent for Laprise and was pulled from the card for a future UFC event.
